The Majesty of the Sea
I love the ocean best when it's cold and the beaches are barren. I like how my boots sink into the sand and the way the wind rips through my hair, making it a salty, knotty mess. The crash of the waves seem louder, too, when they don't have to compete with the noise of bathers, as do the eery calls of the gulls hovering above, riding the wind like surfers do the water. Just as Maria runs to the hills when her heart is lonely, I escape to the ocean. I want to feel small, know my problems are but a drop of water in the greatness of the sea.
Photos taken near Rye, UK in late October. The model is my beautiful mother.

H by Hudson: A Love Story
Back in college, I foolishly made the mistake of [somehow] mentioning that a new pair of shoes can truly change one's life during an in-class discussion on Madame Bovary. A little hyperbolic? Yes. Off-topic? Probably. True? Absolutely! Nonetheless, my professor never let me live it down. "How could anyone believe that shoes could inspire such a great change in someone's life?" he wondered. Simple: When you're wearing great shoes you feel great, and when you feel great, great things are more likely to happen to you. It's the truth. Honest.
Whilst touring through the ancient seaside town of Rye, I came across a terrific boutique called Bird. What lured me into Bird was the fact that, upon a previous visit to Rye, a pair of fantastic leather lace-ups had been on display in the window and caught my eye. Unfortunately, the store was closed at the time seeing as it was late in the evening but the image of those shoes stayed with me. Thankfully, upon my second visit, Bird was open for business. The shop is wonderfully curated and sells the loveliest clothes and accessories. Everything from Jonathan Adler candles to cozy knits made my heart go pitter-patter with joy and then, and then, I laid eyes on these boots and within an instant was deeply and tragically in love.
The boots are by a London-based company called Hudson. They're simple, well made, and, after a damp and lengthy walk through London, prove to be incredibly comfortable, too. Plus, they're totally changing my life. Promise.

Ambassador Kate, Part II
It's announced, it's official! Jump over to The Adventures of Samantha House Jewelry to read a little bit more about my take on style, why I am so excited to be working with SHJ, and what I think her spirit animal should be.
Also, be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook, too! I cannot even begin to imagine how much fun I'm going to have in this new position and I hope that you share the experience with me! Like, we are going to have so. much. FUN.
Again, many thanks to the very talented Ollie Reimann for the pictures.

p.s. I'm wearing a Samantha House Slinky Earring in Gold in the photos. I'm really enjoying this asymmetrical look for summer, which, by the way, is off to a glorious start here in England!

I Get Excited About the Darnedest Things
You guys, I got new socks! This makes me very excited because I love socks. I mean, honestly, is there anything better than a bright and beautiful pair of socks to put an extra bounce in your step?
Last week, I was snooping on Jeana Sohn and my heart flip-flopped for joy when she posted about her friend's sock company, Hansel from Basel. Purchasing new socks has been on my to-do list since autumn but I was having trouble finding a company that makes high quality socks but also maintains that charm and unique perspective that makes special socks really special. I wanted to find a designer that loves socks with a wide variety of colors and styles. Hansel from Basel is just what I was looking for. I love that they're based in L.A. and employ creative marketing tactics, like a sock of the month club, to connect with customers and reinforce loyalty.
When packing yesterday I took my bin of socks and threw almost all of them away and it felt so good! I then replaced them with my lovely new socks, void of holes or yucky threadbare patches. I am very very excited to wear my new socks and show them off- especially those polka-dot beauties!
Have a great weekend, dear reader! I'm going to DC to visit my bff Brent and will be back on Tuesday. See you then!

@ Hungry Mother
I don't know if you've caught on yet, but I love going out for drinks and/or dinner. When I lived in Minnesota, where there is a rich coffee shop culture, I would park myself at one of my favorite cafes and do homework all evening long. I'd usually arrange for a constant stream of friends to stop in and interrupt me, but when none were available I'd make new friends. In 2006, I moved to Boston for school and was devastated by the small selection of coffee shops and cafes that catered to late-night (or all-night, in some cases) coffee drinkers such as myself, so instead of planting myself at coffee shops, I'd make myself at home on a bar stool. I read books, edited papers, and wrote short stories at bars around the city and made a handful of new friends along the way.
After graduation, my habit of stopping in at a bar had become ritual. Instead of going straight home to a tiny apartment after work, I'd stop at a bar for a drink or two and chat with whoever was around. That's how I met David, and together we've become fixtures at a number of local restaurants/bars, but none more-so than Franklin Southie. I've always been drawn to the idea of a Third Place and believe that having a hub- whether it be an athletic club, cafe, pool hall, whatever- where you can unwind and casually meet people is integral to creating a robust social life. Without the Franklin, David and I wouldn't have nearly as many friends, but because we clocked in some serious time and have gotten to know the staff and patrons, we've made a number of lasting friendships with people we would never have met otherwise. Doctors, painters, teachers, lawyers- until we started talking, we thought we'd have little in common with these people, but over a cocktail (or a couple) we've come to be great friends.
Last night we went to Hungry Mother with a couple we met through a FF (Franklin Friend) and had a lovely time indulging in boiled peanuts, pimento cheese, and homemade pie (amongst other delicacies, naturally). Through our conversation, I learned that families in the south will pass cast iron skillets down from mother to daughter and that some of these skillets haven't been washed in decades (fascinating!). I also learned that having a filthy skillet is actually quite good and made a mental note to stop putting ours in the dishwasher every time David leaves it oiled on the stove top. Through our conversation I learned about authentic Cape Cod Dennis Bracelets and how difficult it is to get one. Together, we ate slowly, laughed loudly, and happily got to know each other better.
Being a social animal can sometimes be exhausting, but going out and meeting new friends (especially at Hungry Mother, which is YUM to the EXTREME) sure as hell beats sitting in bed watching TV- even if it is a really good rerun of Downton Abbey...

Things I Love on Thursday
2012 has been a time-warp. I go to bed each night, wake up the next morning and magically a week seems to have passed. I cannot believe how many wonderful things I have already done in the past couple weeks, and I am excited to continue the trend with a trip to NYC this weekend to hunt for the perfect wedding party dress*.
Because I was feeling a little overwhelmed this morning (so much to do, always!), I decided to take five minutes to focus my breathing and make a list of things that I am loving this Thursday morning:
Things I Love on Thursday (and everyday, really):
- Murray River Gourmet Salt Flakes from Australia (pictured above). My mother brought this for us from Australia and I've been putting it on everything from popcorn to chocolate covered bacon.
- Prada's Fall 2012 Menswear Collection. Willem Dafoe walking a runway? Yes please!
- Ironing out wedding party details. Lots of work, but lots of fun.
- The Australian open has begun. Team Federer, always and forever!
- Planning for our upcoming Burns Supper. We had our first Burns party last year, complete with tartan kilts, haggis and lots of Scotch whiskey. We are very much looking forward to our second one.
*If you know of any amazing vintage dress/gown stores in New York City or stunning boutiques that will have dresses with a lot of beautiful detailing and drama, please share. And no, I am not looking for anything white...
